The Old Ship Harton Village South Shields
Apart from the Christmas Party, the venue for all talks is the upstairs lounge, The Old Ship 147 Sunderland Road, Harton Village, South Shields NE34 6NQ (across the road from St Peter's Church) There is car parking directly behind and to the side of the pub.
On the second Thursday of the month commencing at 1930 hours. As a point of interest, this fine public house The Old Ship is the oldest pub in South Shields.
The following Speakers are presently arranged for 2010 :-
January 14th TASC Member Brian McDearmid T 34 Tanks - The Russian Warhorse A 'thundering' good presentation!
February 11th TASC Member Barry Hailes - 'The Man with the Donkey' The story of South Shields Man John Simpson Kirkpatrick - A very interesting portrayal of this well-known story - nicely done Barry!
March 11th TASC Member Tommy Proctor - A History of Tugboats Tommy provided us with a very interesting insite into the design and operation of tugs from the earliest days to the present, with particularly reference to the River Tyne:What a good communicator he is!
April 8th TASC Annual General Meeting An excellent turnout, a vote of thanks and A small presentation was made to Jim Capstick who is stepping down as secretary. Kelvin Ferries was welcomed as our new secretary. All other officers were voted back enbloc. Phil Work showed a DVD that illustrated the traffic using the Manchester Ship Canal in the 1950's - It was interesting to see how the canal had changed over the years. An enjoyable evening.
May 13th Vera Selby - A woman in a mans world (Womens world snooker champion 1979 and 1981) Apparently Vera went on holiday instead!!! - In place of this presentation, we saw some interesting photographs showing the fate of the horizon deep drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico (**See**)The destruction on the rocks in Gibralter of the Bulk Carrier "Fedra"; H&S 'what not to do' photographs and some very unusual photographs. Phil Work then showed a DVD of shipbuuilding on the Clyde in its heyday. Everyone enjoyed the evening.

June 10th Bill Saunders - Bessie Surtees Bill gave an excellent presentation of this local story of the life of Bettty Surtees and her elopement to Scotland with John Scott and all that followed. The evening was enjoyed by all
July 8th Dr C Fraser - Master Mariners of Newcastle Dr Fraser presented a most interesting talk based on many years of dedicated research into the lives and lifestyles of Master Mariners of Newcastle through the ages: including the early years of the Newcastle Trinity House. Her talk was followed by a lively discussion where members exibited quite a remarkable knowledge of the subject matter. A thoroghly enjoyable evening!.
August 12th Barbara Matheson - Grace Darling Barbara gave a really interesting presentation. It was unfortunate that our computer developed a technical problem which meant that Barbara had to make do without the images. However she managed to portray the story very well with excellent description throughout.

The Tyne Area Shipping Club is very grateful to our guest speakers and thank them for such high calibre presentations.
